位についての英語表現
１．『一の位』や『十の位』を英語で何と言う？
まず、位は英語で「place」もしくは「position」と呼ばれます。
私たちが日常的に使う「10進法の数」では、どのような数も次のように表せます。
これを使い日本語では「一の位に４がある」や「十の位に５がある」などと言って表しますが、これを英語では小数にも広げて表します。
その場合「小数点第一位」は「1/10 の位」と考えられます。

２．例文とその解説
上の表現を使うと次のような文章を書くことができます。
- 1 is in the hundreds place of 143.
（１は143の100の位である） - The thousandths place of 0.3478 is 7.
（0.3478の1/1000の位は7である）
どの位についても「複数形のs」が付くことに注意してください。
この表し方以外にも、例えば「tens place」を「ten’s place」や「tens’ place」とするケースもあります。
どの場合も同じことを表しています。
３．小数点以下の位の場合の特別表現
また、小数点以下の位については「the + 序数 + decimal place」の形で表すこともできます。
これは、日本語で言う「小数点第～位」と同じ考え方です。
- The first decimal place of 2.34 is 3.
（2.34の小数点第一位は３である） - Write the third decimal place of pi.
（円周率の小数点第三位を書きなさい）
英語で桁を表現するには？
では次に、桁について解説します。
桁を英語で表現するときには、まず「整数部分の桁を言う場合」と「小数部分の桁を言う場合」に分ける必要があります。
これらは、表現がガラリと変わるので、次で順番に見ていきましょう。
整数部分の桁についての英語表現
１．整数部分の桁をどう表現する？
まず、「整数部分の桁」表す単語は「digit」もしくは「figure」です。
この二つの単語の違いは「第４章：数字についての基礎的な英語表現（初級）」で紹介しましたが、「桁」という意味で使われる場合には違いはありません。
しかし、「figure」は「桁」以外にもたくさんの意味で使われます。
そのため、文脈上の問題で「digit」の方が通じやすい場合が多いです。
